When putting a document as a subdocument, and the subdocument has list of
numbers, when viewing the subdocument using the master document, the listed
numbers are not the same. The original document shows first # as 1 but if
you look at same number on master document it shows a 9. Is there anyway to
fix this so the master document will display the correct listed #. I am
using microsoft word 2000.

I don't think anyone who regularly answers questions in the Word newsgroups
will recommend the use of master/subdocuments. It's just a sucky feature
that's bound to fail you at some stage. If your documents are so big that
you cannot put it in one document, then perhaps the graphics are too large.
I have only run across perhaps 1 in 50 persons using this feature that uses
it for its intended purpose and really has no choice.

Sorry, I don't have an answer because I don't use Master Documents. However,
you may need the reason I don't more than you need an answer. "Master
Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not only
doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the limited
exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these newsgroups
is that using the Master Document feature is a good way to destroy your
document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are not even
working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said that there
are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and those that
will be corrupt soon. See
