Masterfile problems and design errors

I have a dbase that was designed a few years back in
access97, it was created before i came to work where I
did, and it was designed to be user friendly to older
folks and so there was no real way to get in and screw it
up. As such, something happened and records that were
being stored sequentially were being dropped left and
right recently. I keep daily backup's, so when i went to
restore the files, I came across a problem, the files were
being stored by "autonumber" and in order for me to get my
files back into the same dbase, it wouldn't go to it's old
number, but the next in line. Is there a way i can turn
off the autonumber function, plug in the old files and get
autonumber to ignore the rule that keeps it from coming
back on afterwards? I am thinking of just making a new
table with a different name but exactly the same, turn the
autonumber on, and copy files over, is this a good idea?
