Masterplan in Project Server 2007?

Hi Project Server Experts,

I'm relatively new to Project Server (2007). Before we worked with MS
project professional 2003 with several plans combined in one
masterplan. The masterplan was presented at outline level 2 to the
executives at our company.

Is it wise a to create a masterplan under Project Server (">> insertof your current projects and report them at outline level 2?

Best Regards, Henk

Using a master project for reporting purposes is still a valid option in
Project Server 2007. However, with Project Server 2007 you can now safely
PUBLISH a master project, without the duplication of resource assignments on
each team member's My Tasks page. Furthermore, executives can now do
self-service viewing of master projects in the Project Center page in PWA.
If a user clicks the name of a master project in the Project Center page,
the system now shows a Project Details view of the complete master project,
expanded to show all tasks. For reporting purposes, you should create a
special Project Details view for your executives that shows the master
project rolled up to outline level 2. Hope this helps.

agreed,

But do you have any info on the Resource loading ?? will it not dup the load
factor when we have auto on ?? that is resoource will be become laoded twice
because it gets assoicated with the master plan and also the sub project ??

or Do I have the wrong intel and feedback

When Project Server 2007 was released, one of the first things I checked was
the behavior of master projects when published. I was delighted to find:

1. No duplication of resource assignments in the My Tasks page for
resources assigned to tasks in a subproject.
2. When you click the name of the project in the Project Center page, the
Project Details page shows the complete master project, expanded so you can
see all tasks.

Out of curiosity, are you seeing something different in your own Project
Server 2007 system? If so, please let us know.

@ Dale: Thanks! This indeed helps a lot. I understand that it still is
a valid option and will use a masterplan

@ Gary: Yes indeed, I want to show information about multiple projects

Can I also import all the task updates made by my resouces at
different projects into the masterplan and save these updates by
saving the underlying projects?

Best Regards,

Henk

I remember when we did the POC, the resource center PWA was showing the
assignment being consumed twice - (a) at the masterprj and then (b) at the
sub project level. An that was the primary reason why we never published the
masterproject to PS07. We only Saved it and accordingly, all sub projects
got saved and PM publish and check in each one they own.

I agree, that tasks are not assigned twice on the mytask grid.

I am runnin another POC on the staging area to see if I can mimic the
behaviour as seen in the POC.. or maybe we did the POC wrong and therefore
are not driving the system correctly !!

Since you are using Project Server 2007, you can process the task updates
from the Task Updates page in PWA into each of the subprojects of the master
project. You can then open the master project and see all of the updates.
Hope this helps.

Aplogies Dale.. POC = "proof of concept"

and in this case, we wanted to make sure that resource leveling worked
properly as the shared pool is getting consumed by 3/4 different business
entities..and in the old POC , it was mentioned that we could not upload
masterprj into PWA !! :(-

POF or whatever, I still don't get it. I don't see the duplication of task
assignments on the My Tasks page when I publish a master project in Project
Server 2007. Are you saying you DO see duplication of task assignments or
not? Let us know.

P

/pd

NO its not duplication of tasks !!

its the duplication of load onto the resource.. and when leveling is
enabled.. things seem to go wacky..at least within the resource center of PWA
!!

OK, now I get it! Thanks for your patience. Some days, I'm just dense,
including today I think! :)

@Dale,

Thanks for your help. I thought the only possible way to import task
updates in the plan was in Project Professional.

But now I see I can publish the approved task updates from the PWA.
Thanks!

Best Regards.
