Do you know if there is a work-around for this to be able to enter more than
255?

When I tested, I got yelled at when I went over 255. What happened when you

Put the footer on a separate worksheet?
Use MSWord to print the footer. Then send the sheets of paper through the
printer once more to get the real data.
If you're using xl2002, you can add a picture to the footer.
Use some other application to make a picture of your text (Paint??) and insert
that picture into the footer.
