Maximum number of TOC Styles

I have been trying to create a document with custom tocs (i.e. custom
toc1-9)

I am using the following field to assign my styles to toc levels

{TOC \\h \\t "customtitle1,1, customtitle2,1 ..."

When I reach a certain size for this field (i.e. ~250 charcaters) word
stops accepting values from it (the mappings near the end are not
honoured).

Is there a maximum number of styles that can be assigned in this
manner?
Or a maximum length for the size of this field?

Ideas Anyone?

Cheers

Fernando

PS: I my document is in rtf if that makes a difference.

The only field-related operating parameter limitations specified in the MSKB
are these:

Number of general switches in a field: 10

Number of field-specific switches in a field: 10

Number of nesting levels for fields: 20

But the number of characters in a field may well be limited to 255. I would
suggest that you give your style names short aliases; you can do this by
typing a comma and the alias after the file name in the Modify Style dialog.
For example, "Heading 1,h1" should allow you to use "h1" in the TOC field
instead of "Heading 1."
