I'm developing a c# application using the microsoft's sample
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=301659 to create a merge document but I
just can add a few columns depending on the length of the field name. Is
there any known limitation. If I put 1 char titles I can reach up to 34
fields.

Great!!! That was my problem! I'm sorry I forget to mention that we were
using both Word9 and 10 and we had the same problem in both versions. After
following your advice we fixed it.
