MDE file

I gather that:

* Access 2000 will only create a 2000 version MDE file;
* Access 2002 will only create a 2002 version MDE file, but
* a 2000 version MDE file >will run< under Access 2002.

Someone please correct me if wrong!

I had compiled my vba code n there's no error in it

You must convert the 2000 format file to 2002 (Tools, Database Utilities,
Convert...)

Then you can create a mde.

Ok, bit of a guess, cos I don't have A2k+ here to check!

One thing I am still trying to establish about MDEs, is this. Is it now
guaranteed< that a lower-level (A2k+) MDE will run in >all higher
versions<? So when an A2k MDE does run in A2k2, is that coincidence (as it
were), or is it the establishment of a new, official policy?

I asked around about this before, but I don't think I got a clear answer.
Any idea?

Thanks,
TC

Aha! The key text is: "You can run the MDE file in a later version of
Access." So that seems to say, that you >can< run MDEs (post A97) in any
later version of Access.

This is important to my main product. I currrently generate an A97 MDE, an
A2k one, & an A2k2 one. The installer program senses the version of Access
onm the user's PC, & installs the apporopriate MDE. I assumed I'd have to
repeat this process for every later version of Access. But perhaps I only
need an A97 version, and the A2k version!

Thanks for that info.,

TC,

You're asking *me* about guarantees and official policy??? <big grin> Just
last week I said I absolutely, positively don't do web development - so this
week I have Macromedia/Fireworks MX loaded and I'm doing web pages for a
friend who's fallen behind on a project!! So much for absolutely,
positively. (Forgive the digression; web pages just make me crazy.)

However, in Access 2002 Help, it says the following in the topic "Secure
Visual Basic for Applications code in Access databases":

" - You can't create an MDE file in Microsoft Access 2002 from a database
created in an earlier version. You can only save an MDE file from a database
of the same version of Access. "

" - You also won't be able to convert an Access database saved as an MDE
file in later versions of Access. You can run the MDE file in a later
version of Access. "

I'm sure that the Help files have occasionally (rarely?) stated something
that's incorrect - but in this case, it appears that the Help file is
accurate.
