MDI File

I use Office 2002 at work and a colleague who works for another company has
sent me a MDI type file and I am unable to open it. I have asked said person
to convert it to a TIFF file, but he says the size of the resultant file is
too large to go through their firewall and thus be emailed. Does anyone have
any thoughts? I am trying to make this as easy as possible for the other
person. TIA

The said person could consider converting files to the following format:

1) .xps format
2) .pdf format

To convert to the first version, he/she needs to install Microsoft's .net
Application Framework (version 3.0 or version 3.5) which can be downloaded from
here: <http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/xps/viewxps.mspx>

To covert the file to .pdf format, he/she needs adobe acrobat professional or
Bullzip can be downloaded free from here:
http://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php

..mdi file can be read if you have Office 2003 or above. If you have Office
2007, try this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926198

Hope this helps.

I'm not positive, but I think Microsoft Office Document Imaging is part of
2002, perhaps as an optional component. That would be the app to open the
file; you might try running setup and choosing to add components to see if MODI
is offered.

Steve,

2002 doesn't support .mdi, that format was introduced with 2003.

If your friend saved said file as a G4 TIF (black and white with fax
compression) the resultant file should be even smaller than the current
..mdi (if it is 256 greyscale) and you should be able to open that.
IRfanview (free program) will do that conversion.

Thanks, Bob.

I'd never tried it in 2002 ... I generally don't mess with these Office and the
Seven Dwarves apps until they've been around for two versions of Office and don't
like to use them "for serious" until they show up in a third version. I figure by
that time, they're probably there to stay; otherwise they might disappear in a
subsequent Office release so there's no sense getting dependent on them.

I see MODI's in 2007. Must be safe for me to come out of hiding. ;-)

Sort of. I thought and still think that Clippie bites. Does that count? ;-)

But I still miss the image editor. Not because it was generally useful (it was buggy
as sin and annoying) but because you could copy and paste imaegs from other office apps
into it and save them to get the original resolution image. For some reason, no other
app allowed that.
