mdi files not recognized

I have used mdi files extensively for a number of years. Suddenly my system
does not know what program to use to open them and I must select Document
Image Writer every time I open one. What could have happened to cause this
and how do I reset to default to Document Image writer.

Sounds like the association became lost. Right-click any .mdi file, properties,
opens with...change. Re-associate the .mdi files.
