Hi Anj,

MS Office .MDI files are a MS variant of the TIFF graphics file format and as such can store multiple images within a single graphic
file.

Bob,
Thank you for replying, so if i understand you correctly, no database
is used ? images are saved as files ? how are they retrieved ? how are
they viewed and how is OCR information saved ??
Thank you.

Hi Anj,

Well, I suppose that 'technically' any file that keeps an index and content within a container could be considered a 'database', so
from that standpoint any TIFF file could qualify.

The only tool MS provides for reading and processing .MDI files is
MS Office Document Imaging in Office 2003 and Office 2007. The annotations and OCR'd data are stored within the .MDI file
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HP030812361033.aspx
and can, in some cases be searched.
