Media Package Files

Tony Frazer

When I download chosen graphics from Microsoft, they are
bundled and downloaded as a media package file (.mpf) onto
my hard disk. I don't know how to then install the graphics
files within the .mpf file for use using Clip Organizer -
it doesn't even recognise the format (I use Office
Professional XP with Windows XP Home).

Can anyone supply step by step instructions for accessing
..mpf files?

Thanks very much

If double-clicking on a MPF brings up the "What do you want to open this
file in" dialog, choose Clip Organizer. (It's MSTORE.EXE).

Otherwise, to reset the file association, please try the following:
Open My Computer from your desktop

Click VIEW | FOLDER OPTIONS (or Tools | FOLDER OPTIONS for WindowsXP)

Click the FILETYPES tab.

Scroll down and click on MPF if you're using Office XP or later.

Click the "Change." button next to the "Open with:" Label.

Pick Microsoft Clip Organizer from the list.

Click Ok.

Click Ok.

Which browser are you using to download the clips? I find that when I try to use Netscape, clips are downloaded to a separate file and difficult to deal with, but when I use Internet Explorer, clips are automatically inserted into the clip gallery.
HTH!

Susan, yes, I use Netscape (Internet Explorer failed a
few months ago on my computer and I was never able to get
it going again, so I use Netscape now).

Can you or Eric advise me how to open these .mpf files?

Eric, clicking on the .mpf file does open Microsoft Clip
Organizer, but I don't know how to use MCO to get into
the file and release the graphics files enclosed.

Running add files to organizer does not do any good as it
does not recognise the existance of these .mpf files.

Thanks for any advice,

Tony Frazer

When Netscape opens clip organizer, the clips should be automatically
extracted into the downloaded clips folder.

3 developments/comments since my last message

1. I tested Microsoft Explorer and found it is up and running again. Using ME as my default browser may overcome the problem reported by Susan

2. In response to Eric's last comment, I click on the .mpf file, Microsoft Clip Organizer opens, but nothing happens after that (however, on my work computer, MCO extracts the graphics files as Eric describes)

3. Despite this, I may have another solution. When I am working offline, and I use MCO to search for, say, 'flags Canadian', four images pop up. If I am online and in contact with the Microsoft website, the search will produce a lot more images, including provincial flags etc. Obviously, my computer in some way interrogates the Microsoft graphic database for its selection of available images. There is some comment about Activex doing something of this sort on the website, but I am always told that it won't install

Anyway, this approach seems to give me access to extra images from Microsoft. I notice the vast majority of images available on the website duplicate the images on the graphics CD that came with Office XP Professional, but easy downloading will save on dragging out the CD everytime you want an unusual image.

Anyway, I hope this is end of story, despite the malfunctioning MCO

Yes, all clips on the website are available through the Clip Organizer task
pane.

Yes, most of the CD images are included on the website, but there are over
100000 more which are not on the CD.
