Memory is not hard disk space. How many programs are running in your system
tray? How many programs do you run at one time? When was the last time your
restarted your computer?

Greetings all,
We are using Win98 with MS FP.

We have 12.7 GB capacity on the hard drive and 11GB free.

Just recently we have had trouble working with multiple images (.jpg files)
at one time with a paint program (Paint Shop Pro) because the computer says
that there is not enough memory available.

In the past we could open twenty images on the screen at once - now after
five images we get the insufficient memory messages.

This never happened before and we do not understand why we are getting this
message.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Eddy

Try increasing the size of your swap file. On win2k it is automatic (after
you click OK when the out-of-memory pops up).

I just dropped 113 jpeg's (about 500k each) onto a page, did a select all
and hit "auto-thumbnail". About 15 minutes later, right about when I was
about to press the reset button, a message that i needed more virtual memory
popped up. I hit o.k. and about 30 minutes later all the images had been
reduced to thumbnails. This process would be significently slower in win98
I suspect. I have a dual 1ghz P3 with 256mb and win2k for comparison my
swap file is now just under 1gb.

I haven't ever done it, so I'm not sure if it would do something like clear
the history pallette and therefore limit your options for undoing things (or
have some other unintended effect), but you can, in Paint Shop Pro (at least
in version 9) go to edit>empty clipboard and possibly speed things up.

Again, I haven't done it and I don't really know what the effects may be on
something like the history pallette, but it will free up some ram which may
be your problem.

Also, when I used win98 (which was right up until very recently) I use to
run into some other problem that I think was cache related. I rarely turned
off my computer as a matter of course but i learned that if things were
bogging down oft-times just restarting the comp would help.
