Memory error

P

Patrick 813

Receiving application error - "The instruction
at "Ox77fcaa14" referenced memory at 0x000000000 - memory
could not be written. Click OK to terminate program.

Also - The instruction at "0x77fcdf2a" referenced memory
at "0x001c42b0". The memory could not be read. Click OK
to terminate program.

These error boxes appear when I try to hand link text.
When the text link box opens up and shows all the existing
folders and pages on the web - it also includes several
references (at one time there were four) to c:Documents
and settings/Administator/MyDocs/MyWebs/Currentweb (which
is the place I keep this current web)And then I get the
message that Front Page has to close down.

I have never seen a reference to the c: location of this
web in a link box. I never get a chance to delete it.
When you examine this web using MyComputer - it shows only
the folders and pages that are in the web.
Front Page just keeps closing down.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the usual repairs in the sequence below:
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to log on as an admin (other than the NORMAL user name) and look in the super hidden folder
C:\Documents and Settings\NORMALUSERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) In Windows Explorer Find and delete the file hidden file CMDUI.PRF
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\State
4) Run a Repair on IE
(see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=318378 )
5) Install all Service Packs for your OS, IE, MS Office and your Video card
(Windows Update and Office Update sites, plus your video card supplier site)
6) Open FP and Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins,
7) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Stefan,
We are using Windows 2000.
1. I went to C:\WINNT\Temp- deleted all temporary files.
We do not have any user profiles on this computer. We
sign in as administrator all the time. So I could not find
any USERPROFILE\Local settings\Temp

2. Went into Windows Explorer - there were no hidden
*.web files
3. In Windows Explorer there was no hidden file CMDUI.PRF
(again no user profile)
4. Did not run a repair on IE - article 318378 is for
repair on an XP OS - we are Windows 2000.
5. Only last week we loaded the security upgrade and we
are now up to Service Pack 5 on Windows 2000.
6. Got into front page and I have never installed any add-
ins.
7. Got into Front Page and ran a tools/recalculate
hyperlinks on my web, and thought I was home free. But
when I went to the hyperlinks box. I got my usual "Front
Page has a problem and will shut down".

Did do a little looking into my computer and went to Task
Manager to see about memory. Right now I have a Total of
393496K in Physical Memory - cache is taking up 251524
(total of 36 processes - just installed NAV Professional -
seems to have put a few more heavy eating processes in my
Task Manager)- so that leaves me available 173888K.

Could we install more memory to get to the 512 MG my Dell
computer says is the maximum i can install?

I also have the 2003 upgrade to my Front Page, but have
been hesitant to put it on. Will that solve any problems
or just cause more?

Thanks so much.

Re 1-3
You will need to set Windows Explorer to show all files (hidden/system/known file types and folders)
- if you have ever opened and closed a FP web you Will have web cache files (*.web) and you will always have a cmdui.prf

What about running the Repair of FP?

Try turning off as many background apps as possible to see if the memory error persists

PS

IMHO
Running everything as Admin is not a safe practice and gives you none of the per user segregation and security of Windows

Stefan,
Been busy. Set Windows Explorer to show all hidden
files. Found cmdui.prf and deleted. Found four .web
files and deleted. Noted there was one in there that had
my web name duplicated twice. Deleted all of them.

Ran repair of FP - did not ask for original disc and
reported "set up completed successfully".

After I reopen FP, and tried to work in the web, I get one
try to Edit Hyperlink. When I right click on a hyperlink
and get the Edit Hyperlink box on the first try there
appears all the right folders and pages. If I go to
another hyperlink and right click - I get the Edit
Hyperlink box, but there within the box sits two copies of
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My docs\My
webs\Current Best small hotels - (the name and storage
place of this web on my hard drive) with the little blue
icon next to them and then follows the open pages and then
the folders and other pages of the web.

Then if you click - up comes the Front Page has
encountered a problem and closes down.

If you go to c:\docs and settings, etc and check on the
files for this web - there are only the proper amount of
files and folders that should be there.

Tried it twice. You can get one shot at the Edit
hyperlink box after you restart FP - but if you look a
second time - you find those two copies of the C: address
and FP closes.

While I was in FP I went to FP Help - received this error
message " Program error MSOHELP.exe has generated
problems. will be closed.

We appreciate your help in using the user profiles, but we
are a completely home based small web publishing literally
MOM and POP operation. Only my husband and I have access
to these machines. We installed NAV professional last
week. Is it possible this has caused any problems? I
last used FP to set some jpegs. This web is a marketing
web for Caribbean hotels - I use Photoshop to skinny down
the jpegs, and there are thumbnails and 800x550 larger
versions of these. They are all 72 dpi, but there are a
lot of them.

I set about 30 pictures on June 6, and did not have any
trouble publishing this web to its server on that date.
NAV was installed on June 13 and as I used FP on Monday -
the trouble began.

NAV the problem? Is there a limit to how much can be in a
FP web? Number of files? Megs?

Reason to think about uninstalling FP 2002 and
reinstalling or using my upgrade. Or are those
replications of the whole web inside the Edit Hyperlink
box a sign of a problem with the web itself?

Thanks for all your help.
Pat

There are no limits in FP 2002 (or the upgrade) on the size of webs or # of links
- but FP always performs better if large webs are broken down into subwebs in terms of speed of "processing" webs
- so IMHO upgrading probably won't cure the root problem, but FP2003 is much better than FP2002, so do upgrade

You can try disabling NAV to see if it stops the crashes
- it may be part of the problem (if not set to allow FP permissions correctly)
But you appear to be opening Disc based webs which normally shouldn't invoke NAV

FP also can have links problems w/ disc based webs with spaces in folder names
Try opening your root web at
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My docs\My webs\Current Best small hotels
and File Publish it to a new top level folder w/o spaces as a new disc based web
- say C:\Current_Best_small_hotels
Then open that new disc based web and see if you have hyperlink problems (you can delete the old FP web by opening it and right
clicking it to select delete in FP)

FYI
- the hyperlink dialog in FP 2002 is a MS Office std shared dialog
Are you running any other versions of MS Office products on the same machine, from a prior version (say Word/Excel 2000, etc.)
- is so, when you installed FP 2002 you should not have installed any of the MS O common shared files (unsupported by MS)

Also check for the latest video card and directX drivers for your OS (memory crashes can be video related too) - the duplication of
listing of files may actually be video driver related

PS
You can do as you please on log in
But it doesn't matter if there is only 1 user on the PC
Admin log in is meant for system setup/maintenance ONLY, and not for day to day operations, and as Admin you do not have the same
user folder structure as a valid logged in user
- that may cause you some user problems w/ some programs
- that also leaves your PC wide open for attack (even w/ NAV), especially if you are not using a strong password
- Good luck running on the edge

Stefan,
I found heaps of duplicate folders containing cookies - a
FP Temp Dir under administrator\local settings\temp\Front
Page temp. When I went into control panel and Internet
Options and said delete temporary files, it did some, but
some were buried in folders. Deleted all the junk. Got
into FP and did not get memory error.

I still get multiple copies of the c:doc&set\adm. etc. in
the Insert Hyperlink Box. Found out there are as many
copies of that address in the Insert Hyperlink box as
there are open pages on my web. For instance, if I have
four pages open in the web, when I go to the Insert
Hyperlink box - there are four sets of that address. If I
close down two pages of the web, then when I go to the
Insert Hyperlink Box there are only two copies of that
address. When you put the cursor over each of them
individually - down in the bottom of the box in the
address section there appears one of the pages that is
open.

That mystery is still not solved.

I have been mulling over this problem. I used to edit
this web directly on the server. I may go back to doing
that. It does make it more difficult if there are any
problems, and you cannot leave anything undone.

We will take all your advice. I will resave the web in
another folder using no spaces and maybe download a copy
of the good web from the hosting server and put it in
another folder.

We will update the video card and directX drivers.

And we will change the way we log in to this computer.

But for right now, I have to say thank you so much and
because of another obligation, I cannot continue this
thread until next week. If by chance FP is still acting
up after we do all these fixes, I will come back to the
newsgroup and post another message.

I really appreciate all the insightful help and advice.

Pat

There are no limits in FP 2002 (or the upgrade) on the size of webs or # of links
- but FP always performs better if large webs are broken
down into subwebs in terms of speed of "processing" webs
- so IMHO upgrading probably won't cure the root problem,
but FP2003 is much better than FP2002, so do upgrade
You can try disabling NAV to see if it stops the crashes
- it may be part of the problem (if not set to allow FP permissions correctly)
But you appear to be opening Disc based webs which normally shouldn't invoke NAV

FP also can have links problems w/ disc based webs with spaces in folder names
Try opening your root web at
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My docs\My webs\Current Best small hotels
and File Publish it to a new top level folder w/o spaces as a new disc based web
- say C:\Current_Best_small_hotels
Then open that new disc based web and see if you have
hyperlink problems (you can delete the old FP web by
opening it and right
clicking it to select delete in FP)

FYI
- the hyperlink dialog in FP 2002 is a MS Office std shared dialog
Are you running any other versions of MS Office products
on the same machine, from a prior version (say Word/Excel
2000, etc.)
- is so, when you installed FP 2002 you should not have
installed any of the MS O common shared files (unsupported
by MS)
Also check for the latest video card and directX drivers
for your OS (memory crashes can be video related too) -
the duplication of
listing of files may actually be video driver related

PS
You can do as you please on log in
But it doesn't matter if there is only 1 user on the PC
Admin log in is meant for system setup/maintenance ONLY,
and not for day to day operations, and as Admin you do not
have the same
user folder structure as a valid logged in user
- that may cause you some user problems w/ some programs
- that also leaves your PC wide open for attack (even w/
NAV), especially if you are not using a strong password
- Good luck running on the edge

| Stefan,
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

You should periodically delete all the folders in your administrator\local settings\temp\ folder too
The multiple copies (one for each page open in FP) is not a mystery
- that's the way FP works since it thinks you will probably want to link to one of them
- you need the other pages open if you want to link to a bookmark in them
