When using outlook 2003 and you are opening and closing
documents in microsoft word 2003 (some documents are
large 100 page documents word will allocate the
applicaiton more memory but is not releasing this memory
once the window is closed down. Currently my word is
sitting at using 150mb virtural memory. Anyone know
anything??

Although Word may have been closed, Windows XP will retain all the dlls and
memory allocation ready for a fast reload (if requested) unless Windows
needs more memory than is free for another application when it will flush
that memory and reuse it.

However, note that if you are using Word as you email editor and Outlook is
open, Word remains running as long as Outlook is running even if you think
you have closed it. Again, this is for rapid launch of Word if you want to
create or edit an email.

Terry,
Word is still running in the background because
Outlook 2003 uses word as its email viewer and editor. I
have looked at this and still having the same problems.

I think that you slightly misunderstood me. Windows won't release the memory
used by Word unless another intensive application demands it. What you need
to monitor is the usage of the Swap File (virtual memory). If Windows start
swapping out to disk because it is hanging on to Word's memory allocation
when it needs more memory, then you need to investigate. If this is just
Word hanging on to the memory after you have closed it, it isn't a problem.
That's the way Windows XP and Office handle memory.
