Menu bar vanishes

So far my office 2000 has never let me down. Suddenly, without any tinkering
on my part, the menu bar has vanished. Repairing with the use of the Office
Cd has not worked. I do not want to to un-install for fear of loosing all my
mail. I would appreciate any suggestion.

Thank you Herb for this quick answer. I have tried the first remedy using
run. A winword page with complete menu appears and may be used. It does not
solve the whole problem, because using the icon for Winword on the desktop I
still reg a new doc without menu. Shall I leave it at that or try fiddling
with the registry?

The usual problem is a bollixed normal.dot. I would try renaming normal.dot
before doing registry surgery. The RUN solution isn't really a solution so
much as a diagnostic. It's not really solved until you can start Word the
normal way without problems.

1. Close Word.

2. Open Windows Explorer. Choose Tools - Folder Options - View tab. Enable
the display of Hidden files and folders. Click OK.

3. Expand My Computer so that you can see your C: drive (I'm assuming that
Windows is installed on your C: drive).

4. Right-click on C: and choose Search. How your search works depends on
what version of Windows you have and what options you have selected, so I
can't give you step-by-step directions. Use search to locate normal.dot.
Ordinarily, you'll have only one such file. If you have multiple copies of
normal.dot, then rename each one.

5. When you find normal.dot, right-click on it, and choose Rename. Rename it
as something other than Normal.dot, such as old-normal.dot.

6. Start Word and see if your menus have returned.

Thank your Herb, I hope you had a good Memorial Day. My family is rooting
for your troops in Irak.
I have followed your instr. found two normal.dot, was able to re-name one
but not the first one.
Msg: "Cannot re-name Normal.dot. It is being used by another progr. Close
any progr that might use the file and try again."
General Search for *.dot brought up a number of templates and one letter
written by me.
Word still comes up minus the Menu Bar.

You'll need to make sure that Word isn't running. Right-click the Windows
taskbar and choose Task Manager. In the Processes list, if winword.exe is
listed, click on it and then click Close. Make sure that all instances of
winword.exe are closed. Once done, then you should be able to rename the
recalcitrant normal.dot.

Herb, I just now closed all programs, and opened winword. 1st and 2nd
attempt showed no menu. The 3rd and 4th did. Seems for now the problem is
solved. Thank you very much. I hope you hang around for a long time. Take
care and thanks again!

Do you by any chance also use Outlook? And if so, do you use Word as your
email editor? I'm trying to think of reasons that might cause Word to appear
open when it isn't really open.

In any case, it sounds like the problem is solved for now. Let's hope it
stays solved.

Yes I do use Outlook Herb. As of today, the menu is still where it should
be. Thanks again. I don't know what I would do without experts like you!
