Merge Document Issues

I am having some issues with merging two documents. These documents have
been edited by two individuals from the same base document and are currently
saved with different document names.

One of us is primarily updating the text in the document and the other is
updating the figures. When the documents are merged, sometimes the text
isn't updated and sometimes the figures aren't updated. I see there are a
lot of ways to merge documents but don't know which way is the best for this
application.

BTW, I'm not getting notification of replies. What domain are the
notifications being sent from so I can ask my sysad?

In addition, the merged document appears to have been shuffled together
rather than interleaved. Text is present that shouldn't be there and
figures that have been changed in one document aren't present in merged
document.

Additionally, typically one of the documents has changes accepted and the
other document does not.
