Merge field formatting

Problem: formatting the Excel merge data in a word doc. How do you get a merge field to format as a date (m, dd yyyy) on the doc. When I try that it gives me a random text number such as 38079. I've explored the switches in the help menu but still can't get it to work. I'm sure it can't be this difficult because it seems to me to be a very common need. I use it to do thank you letters for donations to the museum so I need the gift amount and the gift date for hundreds of merged thank yous

Appreciate any help anyone can offer!

It's easier to format the data at source, rather than after it's received
into Word. Particularly easy if your data is in Excel: format the column as
needed, then import as text. (The random number you mention is actually the
internal date value for 2 April 2004.)
