Merge-to doesn't allow email any longer

P

Pilot

This worked before, but today when I tried to send an e-mail to a bunch of
clients, the merge-to didn't have an option for e-mail. Just "Printer" and
"New Document".

Any clues?

Ensure that win.ini has the following lines:

[Mail]
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMC=1
MAPI=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1

and that the indicated dll files are present.

Thanks - this does restore the merge-to option. However, I can't find the
file "mapi.dll" on any of my XP systems. Is this a remnant from DOS days?

G

On further reflection, I don't have this file either :(
It's a throwback to Windows 95, and in the circumstances that line obviously
doesn't matter ;)

I have some AOL files that are just above these. I am not nor ever will use
AOL.
Can I erase these files from this? does it matter?

OK I have this problem too.

I went to win.ini and opened in a notepad. It already has these lines

For years we have been sending email using Word Mail Merge and Access,
outputting email through Outlook Express.

What has happened:
Following our normal practice:
Click on the Tools menu and click on Mail Merge… display the Mail Merge
Helper dialog box. Set up document and data source. Then in the Mail Merge
Helper dialog box, click on "Merge"… button in the lower part of the dialog
box. Opening the Merge dialog box. In the Merge to: field, drop down list -
normally we select Electronic mail.

However, Electronic mail is no longer in this list. What do we do to get it
back!?

Programs etc:
Word 2000 (9.0.2720)
Access
Outlook Exress
Windows XP SP2

Can you help?

If you select Toolbars from the View menu and then check the Mail Merge
item, is the necessary button available on the toolbar that is then
displayed?

The necessary lines have been commented out - instead of

;msconfig MAPI=1

you need

MAPI=1

and so on.

It looks as if someone has run the msconfig utility (which lets you make
changes to the way your system starts up) and made changes which may need to
be reversed. Let's hope it's just these ones.

The semi colons should not be at the beginnings of those lines. The semi
colon tells Windows to ignore the line - it's a comment marker!

Although it's worth trying the suggestion in the page Grham has pointed you
to, I'm not sure it's going to provide the solution in this case. But nor do
I think MS has closed off the merge to email facility.

Are you using the full Outlook to do the merge, or Outlook Express, or
something else? Have you used another emailer at any point recently for any
reason?

Not sure what I did but electronic mail does now show up on my mail merge
panel. Unfortunately the problem has evolved. When I try to do a mail merge
to email, mapi.dll is reporting an error and Microsoft is being sent a dump.

To answers Peter's question, I am using Live Mail.

OK I have this problem too.

I went to win.ini and opened in a notepad. It already has these
lines (copied as shown)
[Mail]
;msconfig MAPI=1
;msconfig CMC=1
;msconfig CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
;msconfig CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
;msconfig MAPIX=1
;msconfig MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
;msconfig OLEMessaging=1

For years we have been sending email using Word Mail Merge and
Access, outputting email through Outlook Express.

What has happened:
Following our normal practice:
Click on the Tools menu and click on Mail Merge. display the Mail
Merge Helper dialog box. Set up document and data source. Then
in the Mail Merge Helper dialog box, click on "Merge". button in
the lower part of the dialog box. Opening the Merge dialog box.
In the Merge to: field, drop down list - normally we select
Electronic mail.

However, Electronic mail is no longer in this list. What do we do
to get it back!?

Programs etc:
Word 2000 (9.0.2720)
Access
Outlook Exress
Windows XP SP2

Can you help?

:

Ensure that win.ini has the following lines:

[Mail]
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMC=1
MAPI=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1

and that the indicated dll files are present.

Have you ever been able to merge with Live Mail (or do you know anyone who
has)? I've never used it, but if it isn't MAPI-compatible it simply will not
work - it may be worth asking in an appropriate Live forum (sorry, I don't
know much about Live). Also, as far as I know, the only e-mail software that
will work correctly when you select the HTML format option in merge is the
full Outlook.

This is what I found in my win.ini file:

[Mail]
MAPI=1
CMC=1
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1

I recently had to reinstall Office 2000 Pro because of a problem with
my HD. After reinstalling it I did a critical update. This is when I
found out the email option was no long available in mail merge. I
suspect Microsoft considered this a major security risk and plugged
the hole. Any other suggestions?

The semi colons should not be at the beginnings of those lines. The
semi colon tells Windows to ignore the line - it's a comment marker!
The Mail section should read

I have used Live Mail with Mail Merge prior to rebuilding my system. It is
somewhat working. The first two emails are making it through and then it
gets sick.

Well, I'm really guessing at this point but
a. let's assume Live Mail is set to be your default e-mail client
b. Does Live Mail have any configuration options that mention MAPI? Even if
not...
c. ...I suppose it is possible that your MAPI configuration has changed as
a consequence of re-installing Office. It may be worth re-installing the
Live Mail s/w (I don't know exactly what that consists of) again
