Merged Cells - Another Way?

Hi,
Given my earlier problems with merged cells and copying
(see earlier post) and the advice to avoid using them like
the plague because of the problems they bring; has anyone
found a way of producing the effect of merged cells (
titles spread nicely over several columns)without using
the facility, apart from judicous use of the space bar?

Use:
Select the cells
Format > Cells > Alignment
In the Horizontal drop down select "Centre across selection"
OK
