Merged cells

Column A1 adds the value of Column B1,C1,D1 and E1
Column A2 adds the value of Column B2,C2,D2 and E2

Now if I merge Column B1 and B2, How do I get column A1 and A2 to recognise
that B1 & B2 are now merged, and that they should get the value from the
merged cell?

Please don't merge cells. Look at the archive of this group to see the
trouble that mereged cells cause.

What is the problem? Don't do an add in A2.
