I have merged 2 presentations and would now like to unmerge. How can I
unmerge them?

Try this

Open a new file
Insert > slides from files
Ctrl select the slides you want to unmerge and tick keep source formatting >
Insert
Delete the slides from the original

Thanks, but now I have another related problem...when I open the pp
presentation, it still says "merging" and takes a little extra time to open.
Do I just have to live with it?
