Mergefield Query

Is there any mechanism within Word 2000 to display a substring of the mailmerge value.

e.g. If the mailmerge data was '2004/10/01' I would like to to appear as '10/2004'.

This problem is not exclusive to dates, and my only datasource is a text file generated by a thrid party application.
