merging addresses in xls to existing custom lable template in word??

i have a quick question:

it seems pretty basic to be able to take an xls doc with standard
address columns (name1, name2, address1, address2, city, state, zip)
and merge it into an existing word X template that has been custom
made so that the address info is specifically on a certain place on
the preprinted label when we print it out. it's not an avery label.

for some reason i'm having trouble getting this to work. any
suggestions on how to get this info into an existing word doc without
having to change the document or the orientation of the labels?

thanks!!

Hi Smithwooddrive,

I assume that as this came via the mac ng, you are using a mac and I have to
tell you the only thing I know about macs is that the wrapping is probably
better than the mac itself. So, it some of this doesn't seem quite right
(or maybe unnecessary) post back and we'll try and sort it out.

In Word, go through the motions of creating a label type mailmerge using any
of the standard Avery formats up to and including the point of opening the
datasource. Before you populate the Avery labels with the mailmerge fields
from the datasource, from the Tables menu, select and delete the table
(that's all labels are, a table with fixed cell dimensions. Now open you
custom label sheet in which I assume that you also have a table, select the
table and copy and paste it into the mailmerge main document from which you
deleted the other table. Now setup the mailmerge fields.in that document.
I am not sure if the mac version of Word has a Propogate labels facility (or
how well it will work if you have changed the label layout, but try it if it
has it. If it doesn't have it or it doesn't work properly, click on undo in
the latter case and copy the fields from the first cell of the table to the
next. Now insert a <<Next Record>> field before the first mergefield in
that second cell and then copy everything from that cell to the other cells
in the table.

You may be able to shortcut this process by just starting the mailmerge
helper with you custom labels as the active document select labels as the
type of main document and choose the use existing document option if you
have that.

interested.

Hope this helps
