merging other databases into outlook?

Hi,

I need to merge a fairly extensive database from another program into
Outlook "contacts" becuase we are phasing the original database out.

Are there are any tips, pros, or cons you can offer other than the standard
directions noted in the "help" files as well as adding fields and any
security issues to be aware of?

The data includes names, addresses, and several other categories of
additional information pertinent to client service. Is it possible to expand
on the usual outlook format to include additional categories of info?
