Message permanently deleted by rule still displays new mail notification

In Outlook 2003 if a message is permanently deleted by a
rule you must manually empty the deleted messages folder
before the new mail notification icon disappears. I have
tried adding 'mark message\s as read' to the rule with no
success. Is there a fix or work around for this issue ?

There is no way around that.

The new message notification fires before rules so it will always display,
irrespective of any rules you have set to act on the mail after arrival.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
