message pops up every time I open a document

I am running Word 97 on Windows XP.

When I open a word document, the page comes up but a
message window pops up that says something like:

C:\...\desktop\document1.rtf is being used by fred. Do you
want to make a copy?

I am signed on the computer under my own User ID, and the
file I am opening is in my own folder, so I don't know why
these messages pop up every time I try to open my own
documents. The document is not open anywhere else either.

Anyone know how to correct this annoying problem??

Hmmm... not sure why not. Try http://www.mvps.org/word , click on FAQs,
and click on the seventh article below "Errors affecting the entire
application". It's entitled "I keep getting files that I am working on
locked for editing. Word only allows me to open them read-only".

I doubt that article would help you out here anyway. :)

How are you opening the files? If they open correctly if you start
Word and go to File/Open but you encounter the error message when you
double-clicking them in an Exploring window, such as your Desktop or
My Computer, then more than likely you have a problem with the file
association and Word is attempting to open the document twice. This is
a fairly common problem after installing Office 97 on Windows XP.

To recreate the file associations, exit Word and Outlook if using Word
as your email editor and go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.

Also, if this corrects the problem then I suspect you are or will
encounter the same problem in the other Office 97 applications. Here
are their commands for recreating their file associations if you need
them:

excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver
