Messages being marked as 'read' when they have not

I have an client using Outlook 2007 on his computer and a blackberry pearl to
access his emails mobile. All his emails, except domain emails from other
users on the domain in his general address book, are being marked as read in
Outlook even if he hasn't read them on his blackberry or on his computer.

Is this an exchange issue, a blackberry mobile issue or an outlook issue? I
am unable to figure out how to keep his messages as 'unread'.

Thanks in advance.

Does the Blackberry sync with Outlook or does it sync directly with Exchange?

We've been testing his account on different programs as well. At home he uses
the Vista builtin mail program and on his laptop he uses Outlook express. On
both of these the emails are not marked as read. Here at work using Outlook
2007, they are marked as read.

I believe it syncs with the mail server before it gets to outlook.

If you start Outlook in safe mode (hold Ctrl when you start Outlook) does it
still happen?

Well, when we opened it in safe mode the message arrived on outlook before it
went to the blackberry and it was highlighted as 'unread'. As soon as it
arrived on the BB, moments later, it then changed to 'read' in Outlook.

That makes me think it is a BB issue no?

It's typical of the kind of things I've seen resulting from handhelds. I'd
say it's a BB issue as well.
