messages downloaded as already open

One of our users has Outlook 2003 with exchange client to
an Exchange 2003 client (Windows 2003 server). Sometimes
her unread messages would change to read messages by
themselves when she does a "send/receive" refresh before
she actually reads them. She doesn't have any other
computer accessing her emails. I've made sure the Outlook
setting "Mark item as read when selection changes" is not
checked. Has anybody encountered this problem? What could
be the cause besides the possibility that a third-party
is accessing her emails somewhere else?

Does she have a message rule configured that automatically marks messages as
read when they arrive?

No, no such rules. Sometimes they are downloaded as
unread but change to open after a send/receive refresh.

It was her PDA's pop account that was downloading her
messages.
