Messages received whrn Outlook is closed

Have been using outlook 2000 to retrieve messages from interne
mailserver for past year with no problems. I close Outlook when I leav
home so I can access the server remotely. I don't leave copies on th
server because I get a lot of large files and I don't want it to fil
up. I am set up to check for messages every 5 minutes so I know whe
new messages arrive while I'm working. Suddenly, new messages hav
started appearing in Outlook while the application is closed. I connec
through a cable modem over a wireless network, but nothing has change
recently. How is this possible

Are the messages showing up at home? Are you checking
for email remotely every 5 minutes with Outlook closed?
Which computer is getting the messages? On that computer
is Outlook closed or just sitting down on the task bar?

started appearing in Outlook while the application is closed.

This doesn't make any sense. How can you tell they've shown up if you
aren't using Outlook to see that they've shown up? And if you start up
Outlook to check, it seems reasonable to think that it downloads them at
startup in time for you to see them there.

It's not unheard of to have more than one copy of Outlook running
(inadvertently). Perhaps there is one running about which you're not aware.
Use the Task Manager to find out.

even hear the message alert when a new message comes in with the

Then the application is not really closed, since it's Outlook that generates
the alert.
