messaging interface has returned an unknown error

I can't delele the messages from my "deleted items" folder. When I attempt I
get "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If problem
persists, restart outlook." I've restarted repeatedly and change.

I'm on Windows XP and using Outlook 2002/SP3

Any suggestions?
