messaging interface has returned an unknown error

When trying to compose a message in Outlook I get this
error message. I have updated to be sure that I have the
latest patches and have run repair on my .pst files.

In conjunction, when trying to receive messages, the
error "operation failed" appears.

I am able to read messages that were in my inbox, but not
able to receive or send new ones.

It worked fine yesterday.

Clear your Deleted Items folder and try again.

Another thing you could try is to reset the Toolbar; all Toolbar
customizations will be lost and the Toolbar will reset to what it looked
like when you first installed Outlook. To do this locate outcmd.dat and
rename it to outcmd.old when Outlook is closed. By default
you can find it here;
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Tips of the month:
-Backup and Restore
-Create an Office XP CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 3

Thanks Roady,
I tried your suggestion regarding the toolbar (I have it
set to delete messages when I exit), but still no luck.

Any other ideas?

Does it also happen when you start Outlook in safe mode? Start-> Run; "path
to outlook.exe" /safe
