Messy behavior in older file (arrows won't connect)

I'm dealing with some big flowcharts that are in "legacy" files (that's
a nice way to put it). Nothing works quite the way I'm used to with
Visio, so I'm thinking it has to do with older releases of Visio. The
worst part is that arrows don't connect with shapes the way I'm used
to, and sometimes they won't connect at all-- that's my problem today.
Another strange behavior is that the text part of a shape is a bit
independent of the shape and can be separately selected. This
independence doesn't help me and just makes things complicated. Is
there a way to make these behave in what I thought was the standard
Visio way?

What you may be seeing is that the people who created the original flowharts
were not totally familiar with Visio and some of it's features.

The connection of shapes, arrow and text go back to Visio 1.

You can update the files to Visio 2003 and it looks like you are in for a
bit of tweaking.
