Microphone sound not received

When I try to record narration I get a message that Powerpoint (2003 SP1) is
not receiving sound from the microphone - which works perfectly in other
applications and according to the Sound Hardware Test Wizard. The message
suggests checking settings in Multimedia and in the Language Bar -- but my
Control Panel does not list Multimedia and in Regional & Language
Preferences/Text services/Details/Preferences Language Bar is greyed out.
Furthermore no microphone is shown when I open Volume Control by clicking
the task bar audio icon.

Try it again. Double click the Volume icon on the task bar. Then go to Options
Properties and click the "radio button" next to Recording. In the list of

volume controls make sure that Microphone is checked. Click OK. Then, make
sure that the Select button is checked under Microphone and adjust the volume
appropriately. Close the dialog and try recording narration in PowerPoint
again. Does it work?
