Microsoft® Office 2007 Beta

P

Premal

I received an email from Microsoft inviting to try Office 2007 Beta. Has
anybody tried 2007 Microsoft Office system beta 2? Is it safe to install?

Thanks.

Please remember that this is a BETA. You need to be willing to risk the
stability of your computer and other programs if you choose to run it on
your main computer. Plus it's a time-bombed copy. What will you do in
February when it converts to a viewer?

I find that it has some excellent features. However, it is a bit unstable.
If you are a person that typically uses advanced program features you may
find it frustrating. I have noticed that when I work with styles, try to
customize the workspace, create macros, design keyboard shortcuts, or create
custom page numbers based on heading styles the program crashes. If I just do
simple things like type and make the text bold it seems to be okay. However,
if you are a person that needs to do more than that, you may find the beta
version a source of frustration.

Only about 500,000 so far and still counting.

It is safe to install. Make sure you tell the installer to "leave
previous version."

Office 2007 seems to coexist with Office 2003.

In my opinion this such a radical change in interface it will be a
tough sell to corporate and most anyone who has used previous versions
of Office.

I realize something new has a learning curve, but I believe that a
program should be fairly intuitive just by looking at the menus and
tool bars. This is not possible in Office 2007. It just too big a
change from Office standards AND Windows Standards.

I will certainly not be quick to migrate to Office 2007 when the Beta
expires on 2/1/07.

Buy it like most everyone else or uninstall and go back to using their old
software? In the meantime they can fly for free in a plane with no landing
privileges. Until I know what Microsoft wants for it I will be keeping my
parachute. :)

Sure - but don't be surprised if it involves a lot more than just
uninstalling Office 2007.

Can you expand on some of this or provide some repro steps?

I haven't encountered Word crashing if I link page numbers to the
heading styles or when creating macros - I've also used a lot of the
advanced functionally.

I'm not sure what you mean about customizing the workspace but I have
several customizations, options, keyboard shortcuts, etc and no
crashes.

That's a good point. Okay - I will actually *BUY* you a large fountain soda
if Office 2007 is easily uninstalled and whatever version of Office the
public had prior to the beta works without major hassles.

BTW - I prefer Diet Coke. ;-)

Yes, because you are not "the average computer user". I'll bet you read the
precautions and you were careful how and where you installed the beta.

(This is one bet I'd love to be able to lose for the sake of the average
user but I fear I'll be slurping my free Diet Coke in March.)
