Microsoft 98 error: 'cannot fire event'

J

jg

Tried reloading the software. I know - I need to upgrade.
But what's happening is when I open 90% of my docs, it
says, "Word cannot fire event". What does that mean? I
hit 'ok'. and then I can work on the doc. But when it
comes to sending doc as attachment, aol tells me it's got a
virus and won't send it. Help... Thanks.

Hi jg

I'm just guessing here, since I've never seen that error message,
but...

It sounds like you have a macro in your document, of a type known as
an "event handler", and it has an error in it. Further, the AOL virus
warning tells me that the macro is in the document itself, not in a
template. That makes me guess that you're in the habit of grabbing an
old document, changing it, and saving it as a new document.

If that's the case... don't do that! Use Word the way it's supposed to
be used: hit File > New and select "Blank Document" to get a brand-new
document that doesn't have any macros in it.

If I'm wrong about that, I'm sorry. You may get some additional help
in section 4 of
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.
