We have a shared Microsoft Access 2003 .mdb database that is located on a
network drive. Ocasionally we encounter the message "the database has been
placed in a state by user...the prevents it from being opened or locked".

Thanks Joseph.

All of our users are in the "shared" mode. Our database is not yet splitted,
but I'm not sure this problem is caused by that, could you comment? Thanks.

I noticed that when someone makes a change to either a
module or opens a form/report in a design view it can
place the database in "exclusive" mode.

This can be a sign of corruption.

For more information on corruption including possible causes,
determining the offending PC, retrieving your data, links, official MS
KB articles and a list of vendors who state they can fix corruption
