Microsoft Document Image Writer

What is this thing? Do I need it? I'm trying to install a new HP all-in-one
and it won't install. Also, does anyone know why in my control panel, under
printers, there is no box re: print to USB port. I have 2 USB ports, but
they're not listed to check. Only defaults to: print to Image Writer. Driving
me crazy...I try to be more computer saavy, but am lost. Using Office
Professional Edition 2003 purchased from University of Texas bookstore (MS
has contract with UT or something like that).
Would really appreciate anyone's help. Much thanks,

While this is really an OS problem, I can try to help. You may need to add
the Printer using the Add Printer option and specify the printer port (USB)
you want it to use.
