Microsoft Document Scanning doesn’t work properly with Multi Page

I have included lots of detail, hoping that someone then knows the solution,
or that Microsoft might fix it!! The detail will also hopefully help others
diagnose if they have the same problem. There seems to be a few Forum
questions, that sound very similar or the same as this scenario that I am
facing... I have also spent a day googling, but haven't found any solutions
to it...

I have this problem with Office 2003 (and had it in Office 2000). My laptop
has just been rebuilt, with Windows XP SP2, MS Office 2003 SP1, and HP 7100
Scanner Software (including Read Iris Software) to hopefully fix this
problem, however it didn’t...

I can scan without using Microsoft Office, ie by using just HP 7100 Scanner
software, where the document works fine; It also works fine using the Read
Iris application. Therefore this leads me to assume that this bug is with
Microsoft Document Scanning...

Testing:
If I scan in just one page using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), it
scans in ok and shows up as a 1 page document... within the Microsoft
Document Scanning Tool.

However, if I scan in multiple pages 1 of the following 4 scenarios occur.
Only the 4th one actually works correctly. However when scanning in large
documents regularly, it is not ‘fit for purpose’, because of the level of
manual intervention required...

The Dialog boxes options used, the results, and notable comments are as
follows:

1. Scan new Document: View file after scanning,
Choose Scanner: Use Automatic Document Feeder

The first page shows up fine, then all others pages scan in as blank.
(As if I have scanned 1 page of text, and then 2 blank pages.)
FYI: I noticed that it also generates 1 extra page from whatever quantity I
have scanned in. eg. If I scan 3 pages in, it shows 4 pages on the screen.

2. Scan new Document: View file after scanning
Choose Scanner: Use Automatic Document Feeder / Show scanner driver
Scanner Dialog Box: Document Feeder, A4 Page Size..

The first page shows up fine, then the rest of the pages don’t show at all.
(As if I have only scanned the one page...even though all pages feed through.)

3. Scan new Document: View file after scanning
Scan new Document: Prompt for additional pages
Choose Scanner: Use Automatic Document Feeder

The first page shows up fine, and the rest of the pages are scanned in as
blank.
After feeding the whole document through, it then prompts you to add
additional pages, The first page of the ‘additional pages’ shows up with
text, and the remaining pages show up as blank. (And again 1 extra blank page
is included.)
So a six page document shows as 8 pages, with text only on page 1 and page 5.

4. Scan new Document: View file after scanning/Prompt for additional pages
Choose Scanner: Use Automatic Document Feeder / Show scanner driver
Scanner Dialog Box: Document Feeder, A4 Page Size.

Then it scans in one page, and then prompts me to load an additional page,
(even though 2 pages are still sitting in the ADF.) This is frustrating, as
it also prompts you with the Scanner Driver Dialog box again to re-enter the
scanner settings. It then also repeats this for the third page to be scanned
in.

It then accurately shows all 3 pages scanned in, with text on each page..

This fourth option is hardly the solution, what’s the point of paying $1500
for an Automatic Document Feeder, if Microsoft software can’t cope with it??
I'm really need to geth this fixed properly, so I really appreciate any
assistance you can provide.

Thank you in advance, for any assistance that you can provide with this.
It's much appreciated!

M. Ism

Hi M.,

Does your scanner have an option to install a TWAIN
rather than a WIA driver? That may be helpful when
using the Document Feeder choice.
