I am using a MacBook Pro with OS X version 10.5.8, and Excel 2008 version 12.2.4.

A colleague emailed me an excel file (.xlsx) from a PC, and when I try to open it, excel crashes and the following dialogue box opens "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Sorry, the only thing that crash log tells us is "Excel blew up".

There's something in the file that Excel 2008 can't read. But we can't say
what it is...

Tell the originator to save another copy and zip it before they send it to
you. If that doesn't work, ask them to save an .xls copy.

It's quite likely they have used one of the new widgets in Excel 2007 that
Mac Excel 2008 can't read or convert.
