microsoft excel version 6

I'm trying to count the number of instances a number
appears within a range of a1:e244. The numbers range from
1-56.

have a look at COUNTIF. e.g.
=COUNTIF(A1:E244,3)

A Pivot table will set up a count of all uniques in a second. See
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/pivots.htm

(They never made an Excel version 6 by the way ;-)
