Microsoft Imaging problems with scanning

After opening Microsoft Office Document Imaging I click on the scan new
document and get the Scan New Document window. When the icon for "scan" is
used I only get a dialoge box that say's "Microsoft Document Scanning has
encountered a problem and needs to close" and send message to Microsoft. I
have disabled and reinstalled from the computer, and used the original CD to
reinstall the program and no change. I can use the scanner if I go to the
office, tools, scanner selection and the final product seems to be fine.
Short of a total uninstall and reinstall of Office 2003, I am out of ideas.
any help offered would be nice.

I'm running MS Office 2003 SP3 on a fully updated XP SP2 clean installed in
January. I have encountered the same problem. It began after the the March
'08' patch was installed. Unlike past updates which clobbered the printer
functionality, this latest update has effectively wiped out the OCR
dictionary, and changed language settings. It may be just coincidence that
the error cropped up after the update, the error message and memory dump is
consistantly 8 meg or more, and attempts to reinstall from the repair
function have been no help.
