Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Packs - Service Pack 8

Studebaker

I installed Access 2003 on my computer which uses Vista Home Basic as the
operating system. Access 2003 says the following:

"Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Packs starting with Service Pack 8 include an
updated sandbox mode that allows Microsoft Office Access 2003 to block
potentially unsafe expressions. Some features in Office Access 2003 will not
function properly if you do not install Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 or
later."

I don't see Windows Vista in the list of compatible operating systems on the
Service Pack website.
If I install this Service Pack will it work with Vista?
(Vista is so new I wonder if Microsoft just hasn't updated their site yet to
say it will work with Vista.)

Thanks,
Studebaker

I'm pretty sure that SP 8 was released long before Vista, so that it should
already be included in Vista.

Hi.

It works on Vista.

Do not install Jet 4.0 SP-8. You will receive another informational
message, which will probably further confuse you.

Access 2003 already has Jet 4.0 SP-8 installed. There is no reason to
install it again, unless it's corrupted or you've deleted it. In that case,
insert your Office 2003 CD and repair it. And if it ain't broke, don't fix
it.
(Vista is so new I wonder if Microsoft just hasn't updated their site yet
to
say it will work with Vista.)

Based upon prior history, it may take five years or more for Microsoft's
entire Web site to be updated to meet Vista's "current" status, and by that
time, there will likely be a new version of the operating system. It
usually doesn't pay to be on the cutting edge of newly released
technologies.

I'm using Access 2003 with Windows 7. In opening a database Access displays
the question about "blocking unsafe expressions" upon startup. It then
advises that I need to download Jet 4.0 SP8. All Windows 7 and Office 2003
Updates have been obtained.

My product version is 4.00.9756.0 which is not on the list on the support
page for this service pack. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114

So far I've had no issues with functionality. It is, at best, annoying. Is
there a way to fix this?

The easiest way is to go to:

Tools >>> Macros >>> Security

and set it to Low. This assumes that you are smart enough not to open
databases that you aren't sure of. React to any other prompts by accepting
"unsafe" anything. What they mean is code or macros which may be unsafe if
written by someone unscrupulous.
