Microsoft Office 2000

Little bit 77

I have Microsoft Office 2000 installed on my computer and a few months back I
received a notice that there were updates available to install on my
computer. So I uploaded those and ever since I get a message that I have to
enter my Product ID into the box and it reads Microsoft Standard Edition
2003! When I tried entering the Serial # pff my 2000 it boots that out! I
located my Product ID on the 2000 version (it's only 20 numbers) and the 2003
is showing I need 25 characters. Why is this happening? Does this mean I
have go out and buy the latest version? I rarely use this particular program
but now that I need it, I get this!

Help!
Thanks!

Your product ID was for an OEM version of Office. Do you have a new computer
and was your copy of Office 2000 preinstalled on a different computer?

No it wasn't an OEM version but yes it was on my Windows 98 computer and I
got a Windows XP computer and uploaded it to it. Is there a problem with
doing that?
Thanks!

Yes, there is a problem with doing that. Because it came installed on your
old computer, it dies with that old computer.

....therefore, it must be an OEM version?

I still think it is an OEM because of the 20 digit key. Seems to me that's
what my original copy of Office had.

Sorry about that blank response. My keyboard wasn't paying attention.

Retail versions of Office 2000 definitely have a 25-digit alphanumeric
product key. Once installed, they display a 20-digit numeric ID -- just
another example of Microsoft sowing confusion by giving similar names to
quite different things. That may be the cause of confusion in this
situation.

It wasn't already installed on my computer. I loaded it up myself! lol
Would this information here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/com...b1e9&catlist=&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us
help me in the future (the program she was referring to in this post)? For
some reason when I tried getting into it tonight it worked fine!! Thank the
Lord! lol But I would like to know what I can do if this ever happens again!
Is there a way for Microsoft to give you the Product Key?
Thanks!

Sorry about the link, it was a message on this forum dated in January and I
believe the lady's name was Donna Jean and she posted about a program she and
some others had created called Belarc (sp?). From what I gathered it would
give you those numbers! Just a thought and a question! lol

Belarc works great - but not for Office 2000.
