Microsoft office 2002 will not save or open a file

I had to shut down my computer manually. since then, I cannot open a file or
save a file in Word, Excel or Publisher. At this point, my Office programs
are useless. Can anyone tell me what to do? Do I have to buy a new program?
Is is the Registry, and if so, can I correct it?

Please tell us the following:

1) Can you start your computer and does windows start normally?

2) What version of Office are you using?

3) When did this problem became known? Was it within the last week or
so?

4) Can you use your other programs normally?

There is registry hack but I want to know whether it is to do with the
patch recently released by MS.
