Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise setup continuously loops

Hello:

I have Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise running on Vista Business. Clean
install, as far as I know.

Whenever I open an Office application, like Word, and click on Help (or hit
F1), Office Setup pops up and goes through a "Configuring Microsoft Office
2007 Enterprise..." progress box. The progress bar is _very_ slow and when
I have let it run, it has run for over an hour at a time. Eventually, it
finishes and reports that it needs to reboot.

Rebooting and running an Office app, and clicking Help causes the same thing
to happen again. I went through my third reinstall and just gave up.

I did perform a repair install from the original DVD; it took over two
hours and failed the first time. So far as I'm aware the DVD is good and
the system has been stable otherwise. The Office apps work so long as I
don't need Help items.

What might be happening? Anyone have a pointer to MS before I call them?

Take care,

Dave

Before reinstalling the OS, try looking at the setup logs in your temp
directory. There are two different types; the first type is called
SetupLog(<date>).log and covers the Office initial install. The other type
of file is GimmeSetup(<date>).log and this is well named--it logs the
on-demand installation--or demand-on-demand-on-demand install in our case!

I'd look at that.

Other possibilities: Your user profile is corrupted; try logging in as
another user. Or follow the manual uninstall instructions as for the beta
and try that.

I found the problem but I didn't like the resolution too much: During my
original install of Vista, I had numerous bluescreens when setting up the
system. One was notable for happening in the middle of installing Visio
2007!

The root of the problem was hardware--the stupid cheap USB hub attached to
my somewhat new motherboard that otherwise runs Vista great. [censored]

I believe, after much analysis, that the software registry hive got munched
during the crash. Office Setup reported a good install; the Gimme Setup
files didn't indicate problems. So all that was left...a reinstall of Vista
and one week chunked from my life. :(

Take care,

Dave
