I purchased a basic edition from a vendor but the sticker on the CD indicates
that it's "For distribution with a new lenovo pc only".

Is this a pirated copy or is it legitimate to use as is?

Hi Bob,

No i didn't buy a new computer, I originally bought computer from Dell.ca
without Office product but I just ordered the Microsoft Office Basic Edition
2003 from a separate vender.

That raises a few problems,
1. Technically it was illegal for the vendor to sell it to you (not in
compliance with the sales term).
2. Any support for it is to be supplied by the installing manufacturer
(OEM version).
3. You may have a problem actually activating it on the dell and
Microsoft would have no legal requirement to help you out of the jam
(OEM license are the PC manufacturers responsibility).
4. OEM copies are tied to the first machine they are installed on and
can't be legitimately transferred elsewhere.

I think you would be wise to try and recover your money if you can.

Not pirated but probably won't work either. This is what happens when you
try to go cheap. (Sometimes there's nothing wrong with that but this is one
time when it makes a difference.)
