Microsoft Office Edition 2003 trial

I have a product key and am trying to activate my trial, however, I keep
getting a message that says "microsoft could not detect an internet
connection" I am on the internet.

Check your firewall and make sure that it is not blocking Office from
accessing the internet. If that doesn't work, then try closing out of Office
and reopening it back up.
