Microsoft Office has stopped working

C

Cynthia

On March 9th I thought I would improve my computer’s performance by
purchasing some registry cleaning software, Advanced System
Optimizer. After running the software I received the following error
when opening or saving a file in Word, Excel, Access 2007 files.
Before that I was was running Office 2007 on my Vista PC for over a
year without any problems.

“[Name of application] has stopped working”

When I click the shortcuts in my start menu or quick launch bar
nothing happens i.e. the app doesn't launch but I can launch by going
to All Progams / Microsoft Office / App

Outlook works fine.

I have tried the following:

uninstall/reinstalled Office 3 times and used Revo-uninstaller the
third time.
logged in as another user, repaired office, downloaded updates,
performed a full system scan and removed 4 malware/adware infected
file. And still I am getting the same problem. I think something was
removed from the registry, oh also we have tried a system restore on 3
different dates and all were unsuccessful –

I have also set my default printer to MS XPS Doc Writer as I
previously had a similar problem that was related to my Dell 3000 cn
printer; I also went to Dell's website and downloaded the most recent
driver.

Other things that I have tried:

Edited registry (news group suggestion)

CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/Word - Modify Addins ->
oldAddins

CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/Word - Modify Data ->
oldData

LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Office/Word - Modify Addins ->
oldAddins

I also started word by typing WinWord /a and removed all addins from
Word.

I am at the end of my rope and while I have a laptop that I can use I
need to get this problem fixed. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. By the end of the week I will be wiping my PC clean and
reinstalling my O/S and apps but b4 I do that I will try anything you
suggest.

Use System Restore and find a restore point prior to 9 March and roll back
to the pre-clean up debacle. Never use registry cleaners. Most of them
achieve absolutely nothing.

Also, uninstall the registry cleaner FIRST just in case it is stopping
registry changes by restoring the copy it made whilst 'destroying'.

Thanks for your suggestion Terry; unfortunately, I did try my restore
points when I first ran into this problem and they were all
unsuccessful. i.e. after each restore I received a message that said
the system restore was unsuccessful. I did remove the 'Advanced
System Optimizer' (paid 29.99 for something that has cost hundreds of
dollars of my time to fix) and yes I now know that I should not have
run it.

Most of the things I have tried to date have been at your suggestion
from previous discussions; therefore, I know that you are an expert
and I value your opinion. As I said earlier I am at the point where I
will reconfigure my PC but I have a strange feeling that after all
that work I might still encounter the same problem. If you have any
other suggestions up your sleeve I would be open to hearing them.

Thank you in advance.

Let's summarize your current position please.

You have removed the registry cleaner?

You can start Word in Safe Mode using the /a switch?

You have deleted the Word Data Key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data?

If you use Start, Run and type in WINWORD and press enter, Word does not
start: have you confirmed it is not running by checking in Task Manager
under the Processes tab?

You have a locally installed printer driver set as the Windows default?

Yes, I have removed the registry cleaner, and yes word does start
using the /a switch and it also starts using the word icon or typing
winword w/o the /a switch. I haved deleted the Word Data key and I
have set XPS Document Writer as my default printer just to rule out
the printer problem. The only active Application Addin left in Word
options is Person Name (outlook email recipients).

I can open word and type in a new document and even print that
document. I can open documents from the 'recently used list' but when
I try to open a document from the open dialogue box I receive the
message 'Microsoft Office has stopped working'; The same thing also
happens in both Excel and Access but not Power Point.

To make things more complicated it seems that it is getting a little
better i.e. Word just crashed but instead of hanging it restarted.

I know you are busy and I really appreciate your help. From reading
other posts this seems to be a common problem but usually having
something to do with the printer driver, by making the default the XPS
writer have I not ruled that problem out?

Word 2007 actually integrates with Windows Explorer for the File | Open and
Save dialogs. My initial guess is that you have a dead mapped drive set up
in Explorer or there is something that is inaccessible that the Office Apps
do not like.

Thanks for your help Terry, I really appreciate it. I don't have any
dead drives but I'm guessing the registry cleaner messed something up,
as soon as I receive disks from Acer I'm going to restore my system.
I'm crossing my fingers and hoping Office 2007 will be functioning
again.
