Microsoft Office XP crash

Spiker

If I have a printer installed, but it is not on or
available when I start up Microsoft Word/Access/Outlook,
I will get an application error and Office will crash and
close. If the printer is turned on or available, then
there is no problem. If no printer is installed, there
is also no problem. Does anyone know of a fix for this
besides turning on the printer every time you start
Office? Thanks.

Hi, Spiker. I think if you have no printer installed, you will have a
very limited choice of fonts to choose from in Word, which could be a
problem. Additionally, Word depends on information from the default or
currently selected printer driver to make a a document display on the
screen in the same way that the document will print. A workaround might
be to install a second copy of your "normal" network printer... name the
copy slightly differently and configure it to print to the FILE: port
instead of the network, then make the second copy your default Windows
printer. This way, Word will have access to the printer driver info it
needs, and it won't try to print to the network until you select the
network printer.

Since I don't understand networks, I don't know exactly how to do this, but
I'm told you can install the driver locally and still have it point to the
network printer, making it unnecessary to have two printers (one virtual)
installed.
