Microsoft Office XP Professional menu bar submenus blank

A client of mine was working in Excel when her menu dropdowns suddenly
disappeared. She clicks on File and sees nothing but ghostly boxes. Same
thing for Edit, View, Format, etcetera.
She then opened up Word, PowerPoint and Outlook and all have the same
problem, so it's throughout Office.
What could be causing this?

Hi D.,

Did your friend perhaps change the Windows appearance settings to use a different font? The default menu font used for the Office
XP apps is Tahoma.

Yes, and or check to see if the Tahoma font is still installed and displaying correctly.

Bob,
I'm at the client's machine and I can better describe the problem. When I
open Word (or any othe Office app) and click on File (or any other menu bar
command), it opens an outline of the dropdown menu but no contents. Peculiar.
She made no change to the font in Display properties and Tahoma is there and
displaying properly.

Hold on, it's happening in the Start Menu as well. For example, if I go to
Start>All Programs>Accessories and click, I get an outline of the dropdown
but no contents.

I still don't know what caused it but here's what I did to fix it:
I tried to do a System Restore to the day before the problem began. System
Restore wouldn't restore. Tried several other restore points with the same
result. Went into Safe Mode and tried System Restore and voila.
What's the protocol for closing these questions?
